The Abegg Silk Museum, located in an eighteenth century textile mill by the Garlate lake, displays discoveries, inventions and machines for the production of silk from the silkworm to the fabric. It was built and inaugurated in 1953 by the Swiss industrial Abegg to pass on to experts and scholars the instruments created throughout the centuries for the silk industry. This activity still holds a great importance in the East as much as in the West.
Donated in 1976 to the City of Garlate, the Museum houses a rich collection of machines that illustrates the main stages of production: silkworm rearing, reeling of cocoons, silk twisting. It also has a space dedicated to weaving. A final section is devoted to the future, presenting research and new applications of silk in the biomedical field, cosmetics and yarn production. The Museum offers different educational workshops on silk, based on the age of the visitors.
